She got the Artist of the Year reward that year from the Deutsche Gramophone Magazine for the record of the same Brahms violin concerto she performed this evening.

(This concerto has a Hungarian reference as well. Brahms wrote the masterpiece for his good old friend Joseph Joachim, who was his master at the time. He even helped to create the final version.)

She played impressively today, holding the audience with her mathematically precise play and very elegant, light, still very ‘cool’ style. Looking for the word ‘cool’, a story came to my mind. After a concert, Yehudi Menuhin asked the leader of a gypsy band if he liked his play. He answered – beautiful, but he would starve at the table… One can play something perfectly note by note, though to be able to resonate with the audience, improvise, and evoke feelings requires a completely different skillset. Julia Fisher would probably earn well with this light and ‘cool’ style even at the table.

II./ Beethoven : Symphony No.3 in E-flat mayor (‘Eroica’) op.55

The Symphony of Eroica by Beethoven in the second part of the evening fell flat, especially in contrast to the cathartic Brahms. The orchestra and the conductor had noticeably been focusing on the violin concerto, and now they seemed tired and just wanted to be over it. Like when your favourite team starts to play it safe after winning a 3-goal advantage.

rich"}
